The goal at the James M. Barrie Center for Children, Inc. is to be a voice for child abuse victims and to provide a safe place where they can begin the healing process. When victims arrive at the Barrie Center, they will find caring professionals who are dedicated to reducing the trauma of the criminal justice system. Members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) who are responsible for the investigation and prosecution of these difficult cases come together at the CAC to watch the forensic interview and make plans as a team to investigate and provide services to these young victims.
Our Multi-Disciplinary Team includes professionals from the Department of Human Resources, local law enforcement jurisdictions, the District Attorney’s office, and Children’s Hospital of Alabama. Each member of our team has an important role-
- DHR is responsible for promoting and investigating the health and safety of child victims once an allegation of abuse or neglect is reported.
- Detectives with specialized training serve to investigate in an effort to determine if a crime has been committed.
- Deputy District Attorneys prosecute cases of child physical abuse, sexual abuse, and severe neglect in Etowah County.
- Medical professionals provide medical exams and treatment when abuse is suspected.
